Bubba ready for Olympic Gold

On Thursday the controversial Olympic Golf for men tees off and the field has been whittled down to just 60 players with Bubba Watson ready and prepared to make history with Olympic Gold in Rio. Many of the top players have pulled out in fears over health and safety but there are still some top class acts travelling to Brazil, and we have the lowdown on the best bets.

Bubba Watson has been talking about the Olympics for months now and everything coming out of his camp is positive. He’s not always the most reliable character but he seems set on performing to the best of his ability this week and there are many pros as to why he should be backed. First up he will enjoy the course, it’s long and is set up similar to Doral where he has always played well. He’s talked a lot about history and will also want to win for his wife, who was once a basketball player with Olympic chances until injury ruined her career. Bubba sometimes needs a certain something to get him going, and a tournament of this nature is right up his street.

Another that played well at Doral earlier in the year was Rafael Cabrera Bello who has had a great season in both Europe and USA. He’s come off the boil in recent weeks but has pinpointed the Olympics as a big stage he wants to play on and he will most likely be up there with the big boys come the weekend.

With such a small field it’s a good idea to pick a couple of bigger prices and two that really catch the eye are Jaco Van Zyl and Nicolas Colsaerts. The South African has swerved a few big events to prepare for the Olympics and that could stand him in good stead. He’s practiced on the course and arrived early to soak up the atmosphere, unlike a lot of other players. His record speaks for itself on the Sunshine Tour and it won’t be long before he turns that form in to wins in Europe. At a big price he’s worth a punt getting amongst the medals in Rio. Colsaerts is also a good bet as he’s starting to find a bit of form towards the end of the season. With plenty of bunkers his long game can pass these obstacles and the big Belgium loves competing in these sort of high profile situations, as he showed in the Ryder Cup.
