Stage 12 – Giro D’Italia
The last chance for plenty of the sprinters to get on the podium, this stage is pan flat but a little technical in the final km with a horrible turn with 300 metres to go. Rain is predicted which could put a spanner in the works for Lott and Griepel.
Here’s a lowdown on the sprint trains.
Etixx still possess a very good train, but it has been diminished. Trentin is now their sprinter, meaning his place in the train lies vacant. Bob Jungels is in the pink jersey, he will not take part in the sprint train either. Matteo Trentin doesn’t have the speed of his rivals but a strong team can put him in a great position.
Lotto have tinkered with their positions, but will probably go Ligthart, Hansen, Bak, De Bie and Roelandts. This has been very effective and they’ve managed to control the closing 5km of a couple of stages. Greipel is packing huge power and this marks his final chance to claim another grand tour stage. He will go all in to try and take it. The big favourite for the stage.
Not much of a train for Lampre, but Ferrari is a wonderful rider. They will have one more in front of him, but Ferrari knows exactly when to hit the front. The corners are great news for him and Modolo, masters of the dive bomb. Sacha Modolo is my main pick to take this, with two podiums already he can take advantage of the rain and grab a stage win.
